Born on February 17, 1956, Stephen Jemal grew up as the youngest in a family of ten within Brooklyn’s vibrant Sephardic Jewish community. As a first-generation American, he was shaped by his parents’ dedication to family unity, perseverance, and diligence. His earliest experiences came from helping at his family’s discount shop in Spanish Harlem, where he absorbed lessons about business and teamwork that would guide his later endeavors.
Stephen attended Pace University, building on the practical retail skills he gained during his youth. By sixteen, he was already carving his path, operating four successful electronics and music stores. This blend of formal education and early business ventures provided him with a thorough understanding of the retail landscape, paving the way for his future success in electronics retail.
In 1976, Stephen Jemal launched the inaugural Nobody Beats the Wiz store on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Through visionary leadership, the business quickly expanded to encompass 110 stores across six states, employing approximately 6,000 people and generating sales exceeding $2.5 billion. Stephen’s leadership extended into construction, as he established a dedicated team of 600 tradespeople to handle the design and building of over 20 million square feet of retail space.
Stephen Jemal expanded his focus beyond retail into residential and commercial real estate development. He immersed himself in the complexities of zoning and construction, leading projects from inception to completion. His approach centered on property conversion and innovative construction strategies. After selling the Wiz brand to a notable media family, he redirected his energy toward revitalizing waterfront and urban properties.
In 1997, Stephen launched SSJ Development, to revitalize New York City’s waterfront neighborhoods. His vision stood out in a crowded field when he secured the competitive development rights for Southpoint on Roosevelt Island, outperforming more than seventy national developers. Over the next fifteen years, Stephen amassed a portfolio of underdeveloped sites throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and New Jersey, spearheading major redevelopment initiatives and honing his expertise in urban real estate.
Working alongside his sons—Norman, Solomon, Richard, and James—Stephen co-founded JemRock Organization LLC. Together, they envisioned and created the PASHA brand: an innovative project offering luxury apartments with extensive amenities in prime Manhattan locations, tailored for business professionals, high-earning individuals, and international visitors. PASHA also provides “WorkWell” office spaces reserved for residents, blending comfort, convenience, and functionality through the use of advanced construction technology.
Stephen Jemal and JemRock have led the charge in introducing AI-powered, cloud-based, laser-precise prefabrication methods to the construction industry. This scientific, technology-driven approach allows for the swift transformation of office buildings and hotels into new residential or hospitality spaces, dramatically improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality standards.
Nobody Beats the Wiz evolved into a regional retail icon and became one of the most recognizable brands in the Northeast United States. In 2000, Advertising Age listed it as the thirteenth most recognized brand nationally, standing alongside giants like Pepsi. The store’s cultural footprint even extended to television, inspiring a Seinfeld episode and appearing in other popular series and films. Exclusive partnerships with leading electronics manufacturers positioned the chain at the forefront of industry innovation.
With PASHA, Stephen tackles a critical need for reasonably priced yet luxurious living in Manhattan. His goal is to create sustainable, well-appointed spaces for young entrepreneurs and professionals who have been priced out of the city’s core. The PASHA concept integrates housing and workspace in central locations, offering a new model for attainable luxury living.
Stephen Jemal’s innovative ventures have attracted significant media coverage. His leadership at Nobody Beats the Wiz and PASHA, alongside advancements in construction technology, have been featured in outlets such as The New York Daily News, The New York Times, Crains Magazine, and Real Estate Weekly. The cultural prominence of Nobody Beats the Wiz is reflected in its frequent appearances in television and film, including King of Queens, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Throughout his career, Stephen Jemal has remained committed to the core values of hard work, integrity, and family that were instilled in him from a young age. His close collaboration with his sons at JemRock Organization is a testament to his dedication to legacy and generational growth, as he continues to shape the future of urban development through innovation and family partnership.
